An actor and writer, the younger MacDonald was also an amateur radio operator and installed the cityâ??s first radio tower in the side yard. In the modern era, the house had its 15 minutes of fame as the scene of the 1986 San Diego Historical Society Designer Showcase, along with its backyard neighbor, the Garrettson-Frank House. The MacDonald house may be the oldest Land and Town Co. house on its original site and is distinctive for its columned front porch, pedimented box bay windows and decorative frieze and corbels. In near-original condition (the back porch was enclosed as part of a 1920s remodel) the MacDonald House is designated as Historic Site No. 44.
